The great news is publishing with Kindle Direct Publishing doesn't cost anything other than the time to create the book in the
proper format. Additionally, Amazon's Kindle has a new feature that will allow customers to pre-order and pay for books before the release date.
You can now upload your book with a projected sales date of up to 90 days in
advance.
Customers can pre-order their copies before the book is even
published. However, use this only if you have a complete manuscript ready to
go. You just need to provide a working manuscript and a final manuscript within
a month of the publishing date.
As publisher, you can upload your manuscript to
Amazon.com as a Kindle readable book. To do so, first establish a seller's account so the title,
description, ISBN, price, and other information is required. Once uploaded and
approved, your book will be listed as available on Kindle. Publishers can expect a royalty rate of
between 35 percent and 70 percent from each Kindle sale.
Each book title and format is unique and should have its
own ISBN. Since customers can search for books using ISBN numbers, publish one
title with an ISBN for the hardback, one for the paperback, one for each eBook
format, another for Amazon.com Kindle, and yet another ISBN for an audio
recording. Additionally, you would need an ISBN for significant revisions. It's
possible that you could use almost a ten block of ISBNs on one title.
To get started, visit the Amazon Kindle Digital Text
Platform registration site at: https://dtp.amazon.com/mn/signin.
Click the "Sign up" button and begin creating
your account. Once you complete the information about your publishing company,
select "Add a new title."
A new page will open and you can begin submitting your
book information. Afterwards, you can upload your book's interior and cover
files.
Kindle does require books to be submitted in HTML (use
the "Save as" option and select "Web Page" or HTML),
Microsoft Word or Adobe Acrobat. Once upload is complete, you can review and
approve the format.
It takes a lot of work to format for Kindle but it may
prove worthwhile. Many authors sell more Kindle books than they do print books.
